When a force acts on a field (or, in other and more fundamental words, a source manifest itself producing action, events), it generates a change in the state of the field. The most elementary form of change/deformation is a local anisotropy, a non-homogeneous distribution of the basic fluctuations in the Elementary Field (we refer to this basic anisotropy as Perturbation, the former and most elementary form of Action). In a vector analysis perspective, as a differential operator, we can represent this deformation as a gradient. This is the dynamic product associated to the most elementary form of existence.
A field can be considered as an elastic (dynamic) entity. It receives the action of the force changing its state (according to its properties, like the resistance to “deformation” / change of state / change of form) and reacts to this change trying to recover its “normal” state (minimum energy/minimum change or deformation).
This deformation can be considered a strain, a relative change in the physical state (form/shape or size/metric) of the field due to the acting force and the resistance opposed by the field itself. This dynamic strain produces internal forces in the field, that realize the deformation itself, that forces the reaction that tends to recover the state of maximum isotropy, homogeneity, of minimum energy. Stress and reaction are directly proportional to the strain produced by the action of the force on the field.
Strain of a field is a description of deformation in terms of relative displacement of the point-events with respect tothe metrics (i.e. the metric tensor in the space time field) the fields itself, like strain of a body of ordinary matter is a description of deformation in terms of relative displacement of the particles of the body. In an elastic field (elastic) deformations are recovered when the stress is removed or changes in intensity, direction, etc.
An elastic continuum field completely recovers its original configuration/state/energy/information when the deforming force stops. But strain can propagate in the field and even conserve if the strain, the deformation as the appropriate form. We call waves the deformations that can propagate (or better, propagate in the space dimension) and vortices (particles) the deformations that can conserve (or better propagate in the time dimension). Propagating in space, wave conserve (propagate in time) themselves. Propagating in time (conserving), vortices can propagate themselves in space.
On the other hand, irreversible deformations remain even after stresses have been removed. One type of irreversible deformation is plastic deformation, which occurs in material bodies after stresses have attained a certain threshold value known as the elastic limit or yield stress, and are the result of slip, or dislocation mechanisms at the atomic level. Another type of irreversible deformation is viscous deformation, which is the irreversible part of viscoelastic deformation.
In the case of elastic deformations, the response function linking strain to the deforming stress is the compliance tensor of the material.
Energy / information
Energy is the measure of the amount of the inhomogeneity of/in a system.
Information the form of the correlations between the inhomogeneities.
Complexity is the measure of the level of organization of the correlations of the inhomogeneities, the level of organization of the Information. The more the Information, the more the complexity of a system.
Form this actions and reactions exerted respectively by forces and fields stems a universal and ubiquitous tendency to the recover to the energy equilibrium. This tendency is a fundament of the Nature. It is present form the most elementary level of the Source, to the more and more complex levels of reality. It is a fundamental aspect even of the Meta-Reality, of dynamics of the cognitive systems of the living being. We have to be grateful to this tendency (based on one of the three fundamental principles of the elementary dynamics, the Principle of Minimum Action, root of all the conservative principles). Our psychics equilibrium, the capacity to perceive ourselves as “stable” persons, fundament of our psychic individuality.
